Learn, Explore, Belong
Free, culturally grounded STEM programming for Indigenous youth in Rhode Island — on the land, in the water, and guided by educators from multiple tribal nations.
What we offer
A Program for Every Stage
Indigenous STEM RI offers a four-level pathway that grows with each participant — from young campers exploring the outdoors for the first time to college interns giving back to the community that shaped them. Every level is free of charge.

The Four-Level Pathway
Campers
Our youngest participants dive into hands-on outdoor science, cultural teachings, and community. Campers explore Kettle Pond and the surrounding landscape through canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, archery, and more — all while learning from educators representing multiple tribal nations. Everything they make is theirs to keep.
Junior Mentors
Middle school participants step into a leadership role, supporting younger campers while deepening their own knowledge of environmental science and Indigenous culture. Junior Mentors develop confidence, responsibility, and a sense of purpose within the community — and receive community service hours and an honorarium for their contribution.
Mentors
High school participants serve as role models and guides for the entire camp. Mentors lead activities, share knowledge, and help shape the culture of the program — earning community service hours and an honorarium in recognition of their leadership.
College Interns
Our college interns are the program's full-circle story. Many began as campers themselves. They return to support program operations, mentor younger participants, and bring their growing academic and professional skills back to the community — receiving a paid stipend for their role. Just as one of our 2021 campers did when he returned as an intern before heading off to college.
